WHAT IS PREGNANCY MASSAGE?
Pregnancy massage is a specially adapted massage tailored specifically for mothers to be. Massage techniques are normally gentler than the traditional sports massage or deep tissue massage as blood volume during pregnancy can increase as much as 50%. Deeper techniques can cause too much pressure on the lower legs.
THE BENEFITS OF PREGNANCY MASSAGE
Decreased Muscle Soreness
Improved Sleep Quality
WHICH POSITION IS BEST?
It is completely up to you! You can lie on your front in a specially shaped bolster that keeps the pressure off your bump or side lying maybe more comfortable with a few extra pillows. Some women also prefer being in a seated position.
In the third trimester it’s not recommended that you lie flat on your back for long periods because the weight of your uterus presses on your spine and major blood vessels. This can decrease blood flow to your baby.
IS IT SAFE?
Yes, pregnancy massage is safe for most pregnancies. We always recommend you check with your doctor, midwife or healthcare provider whether you have any underlying or current conditions that may prevent you from getting a massage during your pregnancy.
Generally it is advised to avoid pregnancy massage in your first trimester, especially if you have a history of miscarriages. There isn’t any evidence to prove that massage can trigger a miscarriage, but it’s a sensible precaution to take.
